All the time, we hear that too many time-consuming and expensive maintenance issues make it difficult for homeowners to get full enjoyment out of their swimming pool. We also hear that high-maintenance swimming pools aren’t even worth it, at all. If that’s the case, it might make sense to get rid of your existing pool and turn your backyard space into a quiet and peaceful field of grass, trees, and flowers. Here, we take a look at how we remove an existing swimming pool and cover the area up as if a swimming pool was never there—what you do with the extra space is up to you.
In Ground Swimming Pool
First, drain the pool. Once the pool is drained and all concrete, fiberglass, and liner materials are removed and hauled away, fill the area with compacted soil or gravel. Now that the inground swimming pool has been filled in and cleaned up, you’ll need to disclose that a swimming pool was removed from that spot—having little-to-no effect on the overall value of the home. If the pool was originally built without concrete buried at the bottom, the risk of sinkage and seepage is reduced—sometimes eliminated.
Most cities consider the area where a swimming pool used to be, non-buildable. Even if the remains of the pool no-longer exist, no other additions to the home can be built in that exact space. However, there are exceptions for smaller sheds, concrete slabs, landscaping, and trees.
Above Ground Swimming Pool
Although there is a variety of above ground pools to choose from, when it comes to swimming pool removal, they all go through the same demolition and hauling process, and it’s much easier than getting rid of an inground pool. First, drain the pool with a pump. Depending on the type of above ground pool you’re demolishing, the second part of the process could vary a bit, but typically consists of unscrewing bolts, breaking down concrete walls with a sledgehammer. The third step is to haul the debris away.
